“He who is thirsty prays continually and he who prays continually will end up being filled with the Holy Spirit.” Miler Montoya

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18
One of the biggest questions that many ask themselves is how to be filled with the Holy Spirit? The first thing to recognize is that there is a Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit yearns for you jealously. He wants us more than we want Him. He wants you to be filled with Him.
There is only one Holy Spirit. In the book of Acts, chapter 19, the first thing the Apostle Paul asks the twelve men he met is if they had received the Holy Spirit when they believed. Giving us to understand the priority that is in knowing him and being filled with him.
The Holy Spirit is bigger than Pentecost, He’s bigger than a revival event, He’s bigger than a miracle crusade, and bigger than the Church. Every page of the Bible is permeated with His presence and the whole earth will be filled with His glory.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit should not be an option but a daily experience. The children of God “all” must walk filled with the Holy Spirit if we want to win the daily battles. Ephesians 5:18 commands us to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The verb “filled” that appears here comes from the Greek “pleroo” which means “to fill until full”. It also means to abundantly supply or complete; to bring to a realization or be filled to the brim. This is God’s mandate for our lives, to walk filled with the Holy Spirit to the brim.
Here are some biblical prerequisites that I consider we need to have to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It is not that God does not want, or we have to pay a price already paid, but that we need to have the vessel prepared. Many have the desire, but not all develop a true communion with the Holy Spirit. HE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON ON ALL THE EARTH. Without Him, the kingdom does not manifest.
You have to pray continually and fervently.
“All these continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with her brothers” Acts 1:14
Continuous and persevering prayer is the main platform of all revival. The Lord Jesus had given the promise of the Spirit to his disciples. They needed to be endowed with power from on high. But let’s notice what their attitude is. They did not expect the Holy Spirit while on vacation and spending time “relaxed” like a social club. They persevered in prayer. Because persevering prayer is the prelude to every revival we want to see.
If you truly long to be filled with the Holy Spirit, practice persevering, continuous, and fervent (passionate) prayer. Many pray, but they do not pray continuously. Continuous prayer is day and night, at all times seeking and crying out for that wonderful presence of the Holy Spirit. It is like creating sources of power where one becomes strong and one is filled by his wonderful presence.
I take this space to say that being filled with the Holy Spirit has a divine purpose and not only to experience the supernatural. Jesus said: “And you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses…”. The Spirit of God wants to fill us to empower us with his power and thus be witnesses of Christ.
Continual prayer sooner or later will end up unleashing rivers of glory and an overflowing infilling of the Holy Spirit upon your life. If you want to be filled, it is time to seek His face and His power continuously. He who wants to be full separates time and puts excuses aside. You have to love the presence of the Holy Spirit more than anything else.
“Seek the Lord and the power of him; Seek his face continually.” 1 Chronicles 16:11
You have to be thirsty.
“On the last and great day of the feast, Jesus stood up and raised his voice, saying: If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture says, from within him will flow rivers of living water ”. John 7:37-38
The next requirement that is connected with the first is to BE THIRSTY. Note that I did not say that you have to be perfect, or have many theology degrees, or be highly qualified, simply thirst for Him. Thirst is the desire and the need to drink.
The continuous search (prayer) must be given by a commitment. But that commitment must be driven by an unquenchable thirst. In the kingdom things will always seem backwards. In the natural when you drink and eat you are satisfied and do not want more. In the kingdom the more you drink of God, the more you want of God. One abyss calls another. The deep calls the deep.
We all have the ability to be thirsty, but not everyone is thirsty. This is the reason why there are some that are full and others that are not. The Holy Spirit passionately longs for you, but He will never force you to love and seek him. He is sensitive as a dove.
The search must be well-intentioned. The Holy Spirit knows the depths of God, so it is necessary to take a good look at the reason why we are looking for him.
When it comes to being filled with the Holy Spirit, motives are important. Many want to be filled with the Holy Spirit because they want to compete with others, be famous, among other things. Our thirst must be defined by a pure passionate love for his holy presence.
He who thirsts comes, as Jesus Christ said. We cannot say that we are thirsty and never come. Something is not right with you, if you say you thirst for the Holy Spirit and never come to drink of it. The one who is thirsty, activates the search. This search in the believer is not something that he does not have, but something that increases. As in marriage where the two have each other. But if they don’t take time to share that love will never be cultivated and strengthened. Bishop JC Church, my spiritual father one day told me: “Love is time.” Who loves you dedicates time to you. Time is unrecoverable life. When we love the Holy Spirit we spend time searching deeply for him.
If we are thirsty, we come and drink, and rivers of living water begin to flow from within us. A river begins with a spring and ends in a mighty ocean. Thirst has levels just like the manifestations of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In Ezekiel 47 we see this supernatural experience with the salutary waters that come out of the temple. They start at the ankles, move to the knee, then down to the loins, and lastly the prophet had to swim if he wanted to continue. These are levels of extraordinary manifestations of the Holy Spirit. We have to pray that God gives us a hunger according to the fullness of swimming in his river. This is what God wants, that we swim in the river of His Spirit without limits and borders. This is called the fullness (pleroma) of the Spirit, which is the same as being filled. Where every part of our being is saturated by it.
Thirst is being thirsty and being thirsty is a necessity, it is craving and desire. I ask you something, what is your level of thirst? Do not answer me because the answer is reflected in your search. Your quest reveals your level of thirst, as the thirsty seeks to drink. Blessed are those who thirst for the Holy Spirit because they will be satisfied.
“Continuous prayer, provoked by a continuous thirst, will produce continuous filling of the Holy Spirit.”
“As the deer pants for the streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and present myself before God?” Psalm 42:1-2
In these verses the writer’s opinion in Hebrew on the word “roar” properly means the moan or cry of a deer. This roar is a holy desire which we have been talking about. As the servant bellows, so my soul thirsts for God. A thirst that leads me to fill myself.
Walk in holiness.
“Your testimonies are very firm; Holiness befits your house, O Jehovah, forever and ever.” Psalm 93:5
Holiness is cleanliness within and without. We attain it through the blood of Christ. I am a saint and just, not by my human merits but by means of the blood of the Son of God. Now, my new life has to correspond to who I am. We must manifest the holiness that is already in us in Christ Jesus. Sweet water and bitter water should not flow from a fountain.
Holiness is a path that is walked. It suits us all. I tell you this, because there is only one “Holy” Spirit. And if we long to be filled with Him, we must separate ourselves exclusively for Him. Nobody drinks water in a dirty glass. This is how the Holy Spirit wants to fill clean vessels and thus purify them even more. Because he who is holy, he has to sanctify himself even more.
Let us be cleansed, sanctified, and set apart just for him. The Holy Spirit wants you for himself and for no one else. Holiness is He. Therefore, He will never lead you to do something improper or out of the will of the Father. On the contrary, He will always guide you to justice, peace and joy. To glorify the Son and the Father at all times. He who wants to be filled with the Spirit must walk in holiness. And He himself will sanctify us more!
“chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in sanctification of the Spirit, to obey and be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you.” 1 Peter 1:2
Be willing and available to receive from Him.
Revival has to be in your heart before it hits the ground. We manifest what we conceive inside. If we are ready inside, we prepare for a powerful manifestation.
Willing is being prepared (ready) to be used or determined to do something. Available means person or thing that can be at your disposal. The manifestations of the Spirit are “suddenly” and manifest the sovereignty of God. No one can control the how, where and when of the Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit fills us, He will move in us and then move us. When one is filled by Him, one is controlled by Him. He is looking for a Church that is governed by Him and not a Church that uses Him as they please.
To be willing is to be determined to seek Him until He is found. And to be available is to put our lives completely at His mercy once He manifests. In one is the determination and in the other is to be ready for its use. If the Holy Spirit fills you, He will want to use you too. Let’s imagine that we go to the kitchen, because we want to use a glass to drink water. We open the place where the glasses are arranged and available. Washed glasses. We take it and fill them with water to drink later. The Holy Spirit does the same with us when it comes to filling us to use us.
Although we searched for Him, never forget that He searched for us first. The promise says:
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Sinners, cleanse your hands; and you double-minded, purify your hearts.” James 4:8
Getting closer is looking for Him in an increase of communion. As a result, He draws near to us, manifesting himself in a glorious way and in many forms. Therefore, being filled with the Holy Spirit causes various manifestations such as: speaking in tongues, the powerful preaching of the word, miracles, etc. They are all supernatural! We must not confuse being filled with the Holy Spirit with the manifestations that being filled causes.
We don’t approach him on a Sunday once a week. But every day, because the desire to be filled is bigger than an event in time. This is the hour of the Holy Spirit on earth. He who does not walk full of it is dry, dead, warm or cold and needs to know it. I encourage you to walk in these steps that I write here:
- Pray continually and fervently.
- Thirst for Him.
- Walk in holiness.
- Be available and willing to receive from Him.
Inevitably we will be filled with the Holy Spirit if we do this. We will surely be filled to overflowing and will produce the desired revival in our lives, Churches and nations.
